The 7 Principles of Rehabilitation

Good rehabilitation isn't random. The best rehab programs are built on a foundation of established principles that guide every decision — from how aggressively to load tissue to when it's safe to return to sport. Here are the seven core principles that should underpin any quality rehab program.
1. Individualization
No two people or injuries are identical. Effective rehab must be tailored to the specific individual — their movement history, goals, pain patterns, and lifestyle. Generic programs produce generic results.
2. Specificity
Training adaptations are specific to the type of stress applied. To return to running, you need to train running patterns. To return to lifting, you need to progressively load lifting movements. Rehab should mirror the demands of your activity.
3. Progressive Overload
Tissue heals and adapts by being progressively loaded. Too little stimulus means slow progress. Too much means re-injury. The art of rehab is finding and continually adjusting the right dose of load.
4. Reversibility
Adaptations are lost when training stops — this is the "use it or lose it" principle. Long periods of rest result in deconditioning that extends recovery time. The goal is to keep as much activity going as safely as possible.
5. Variation
Changing exercises, loads, and movement patterns prevents plateaus and ensures all aspects of function are addressed. Good rehab isn't the same 10 exercises every session.
6. Recovery
Adaptation happens during rest, not just during training. Adequate sleep, nutrition, and stress management are essential to getting the most out of a rehab program.
7. Motivation and Patient Engagement
Research consistently shows that patients who understand their condition and are actively engaged in their rehab have better outcomes. Education isn't a side benefit — it's a core component of effective rehabilitation.
